Dhanteras-national ayurveda day

Dhanteras

we celebrate this festival every year on the thirteenth lunar day of Krishna paksha in the Hindu Calendar month of Kartik.

we all know that Hindus consider this an auspicious day for making new purchases, especially Gold, silver, and new utensils. it is believed that new "Dhan"(wealth) or items made with metals brings good luck and increases one's wealth.

but many people don't know that the Indian Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga, and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and homeopathy announced to observe Dhanteras as a "National Ayurveda Day"

which was first observed on 28 October 2016.

now let's know why?

Why Dhanteras is also observed as National Ayurveda Day?

Lord Dhanvatri, who is also worshiped on the occasion of dhanteras is considered the God of Ayurveda, who Imparted the wisdom of Ayurveda for the betterment of mankind and to help rid it of the suffering of disease.
according to Hindu Mythology, Lord Dhanvantri emerged during Samudra Manthan, holding a kalasha full of Amrit(jar of elixir) in one hand and a book about Ayurveda in the other, he is considered to be the vaidya(doctor) of God.

Laxmi puja and Dhanteras is performed on the same day because it believed that on dhantrayodashi, goddess Laxmi came out from the ocean of milk during the churning of the sea. hence Goddess Laxmi is worshiped on the day of Trayodashi(on the night of dhanteras)

An Interesting Story Behind This Auspicious Day

The story is about the 16-year-old son of king Bhima, his horoscope predicted his death by a snake bite on the fourth day of his marriage. on that particular day, his newlywed wife did not allow him to sleep, she laid out all her ornaments and many gold and silver coins in a heap at the entrance of the sleeping chamber and lit many lamps. then she narrated stories and sing songs to keep her husband awake.
The next day when Yama the god of death arrived at the prince's doorstep in the guise of a serpent, his eyes were dazzled and blinded by the brilliance of the lamps. so in this way, Yama could not enter the prince's chamber and the young prince was saved by his wife's intelligence. so from that day, Dhanteras is being celebrated.

The following day came to be called Naraka Chaturdashi(Naraka means hell and Chaturdashi mean 14th) is also known as "yamadeepdan". this day ladies of the house light earthen lamps or diyas which keeps burning throughout the night glorifying Yama the god of death since this is the night before Diwali which also called "chhoti Diwali".
